This methodology relies upon dispassionate observation of phenomena. As such, it has some parallels with the Western European philosophy known as phenomenology and those therapeutic approaches that have derived from it. ’ This phenomenological method involved increasingly fine layers of investigation, which refined the quality of perception by systematically eliminating the strata of common assumption and personal association. Buddhist methods of spiritual development, practised through meditation, and also through mindfulness in daily life, similarly seek to set aside the attachment-building processes of attraction and aversion, and to perceive phenomena as they exist, devoid of self-contamination.

Mindfulness meditation within a dharma setting can be considered far ‘looser’ and possibly less technique-oriented than what we find within the protocols of MBSR and MBCT. Moreover, much instruction within a vipassan¯a retreat, for example, would take place through the medium of the ‘private interview’ where the instruction would be individually tailored to the person. Yet, if meditation practices were to be delivered in healthcare settings then that delivery would have to be configured in such a way as to be repeatable.
