Not a turning away from theory in general, then, but a turning toward a great deal else: reformulated in such terms, Miller’s generous list is indeed both useful and clarifying, for it highlights some of the common ground shared by the various modes of sociopolitical and historical criticism that have emerged in recent years (for similar developments in other disciplines, see Ortner 1984). Although diverse in their theoretical origins and assumptions and sometimes at apparent if not fundamental odds in their ideological agendas, these movements have generally shared in an effort to redraw the boundaries of literary studies, to reconceive, in terms of a mutually constitutive and open-ended dialectic, the relationship between literary and other cultural discourses, the discursive and the social.

It is also necessarily partial, in the sense that it does not profess to give a complete or synoptic view of the current state of literary studies in general, or of work that has been either celebrated or attacked as new historicism beyond the field of Renaissance literary studies. In the discussion that follows, I have tried to focus on those aspects of Renaissance new historicism which are at once most fundamental to it, most controversial and (partly as a consequence) most often misrepresented.

Its emergence to a position of some prominence in the early 1980s was viewed by some feminist critics with understandable alarm and suspicion; at a juncture when feminists had begun to carve out a niche for themselves within the academy, a new movement was being embraced by the profession as something like the latest fad, threatening to displace and marginalize feminist studies and reconstruct them, in retrospect, as a passing fashion as well. That the movement in question tended to subordinate questions of feminism to those of gender and questions of gender to those of power only exacerbated suspicion.
