Feature analysis A more compelling version takes account of the fact that a large measure of preprocessing is carried out in early visual processing. As we have seen, information about colour, form, motion, position, orientation and spatial frequency is all encoded early in visual processing. It is possible that Gestalt-type grouping mechanisms are also employed at an early stage. These operations may be referred to as feature analysis and will occur prior to any process of matching input against prototypes.

Each type of cell responds to a particular stimulus so that parallel processing of multiple attributes of stimuli, such as movement, detail and colour, starts to occur very early on in visual processing. Damage to the visual pathway Damage can occur at any level in the visual system. 2, damage to either optic nerve will impair visual input from that eye, but damage to the fibres crossing the optic chiasm will result in loss of vision in parts of both visual fields (termed bilateral hemianopia).

The ventral stream is projected to the inferotemporal cortex whilst the dorsal stream is projected to the posterior parietal cortex. Ungerleider and Mishkin found, in animal studies, that damage to the ventral or dorsal streams resulted in difficulties with object identification or object location respectively. Damage to the dorsal and ventral systems in man also has predictable effects, and these are often observed in disorders of visual processing. In the case of blindsight, the role of the retino-collicular pathway may reflect residual function in the ‘where’ pathway following disruption of the dorsal stream by cortical damage.
