22 Between 1864 and 1884, Bruckner produced an astonishing oeuvre – alongside his time-consuming teaching and his service at the Court Chapel – including six gigantic symphonies, the String Quintet and the sublime Te Deum. Yet until 1884, few of his works were premiered in Vienna. The premiere of the Third Symphony on December 16, 1877, was a spectacular flop: after every movement, members of the audience left the concert hall in droves. The Fourth was received positively in 1881, but the Fifth was never performed in Vienna during Bruckner’s life, and of the Sixth only the 34 middle movements were played in 1883.

Late in 1849, he was additionally hired as “provisional” chapter organist, but he seems not to have found that activity entirely satisfactory, since on July 25, 1853, he applied for a post as clerk at the district court of St. 1 Alongside his pedagogical occupation he eagerly pursued the musical studies begun in youth, in order to perfect his abilities and his knowledge of organ-playing and music theory. 2 Instruction in organ he received once again from Anton Kattinger in St. Florian, who upon his leaving gave him a splendid reference.

For many years, Weinwurm was Bruckner’s only confidant and personal point of reference. He regarded him as his “only true friend,” to whom he could reveal his innermost thoughts and pour out his heart. ”7 Brucker repeatedly confessed to be yearning for his friend, to be “attachéd” to him and to love him. Thus we read in a letter of June 6, 1859: “I am already greatly looking forward to seeing you again, since I have no such friend here. ”8 He greatly esteemed Weinwurm’s “noble heart” and was ecstatic when he learned that Weinwurm returned his amicable feelings.
